Books-on-Wheels, a project of the
Book Industry Association of Jamaica
(BIAJ) which is co-sponsored by
Carlong Publishers (Caribbean)
Limited, was presented to the
Paediatric Ward of the
Savanna-La-Mar Hospital last Friday.
The Books-on-Wheels Project was born
out of the BIAJ's commitment to
literacy, especially as it relates
to young people. The association has
partnered with organisations in the
book industry to develop attractive,
functional mobile book carts
outfitted with age-appropriate books
which are used to supply reading
material to children in hospitals,
especially those confined to bed.
Hospital staff, volunteers and
parents are encouraged to
participate in this project by
distributing books to the young
patients or by reading to them.
Assisting in the development of the
reading habit and the discovery of
the joy of reading are the primary
objectives of this project.
Attending the presentation were:
members of the BIAJ Board of
Directors, Dorothy Noel, Steadman
Fuller and Elizabeth Ramesar;
Carlong Publishers staff: Glynis
Salmon, Bernadine Mc Calla and
Nicholas Bromfield; Savanna-La-Mar
Hospital staff (Lorene Whin-Stanley,
Catherine Frew, Patsy Callam,
Claludette Gayle, Tamara Dobson and
Janice Daley; and two mothers with
their young children who are
patients on the ward.
