Westmoreland
Curry Festival was held on the
grounds of Manning’s School in
Savanna-la-mar on April 30th,
2006. It was an extraordinary
event highlighting some of the
country’s finest cooks preparing a
variety of curry dishes ranging
from our own local Mutton, Shrimp,
Crab, Conch, Lobster to the
unusual Jackfruit, Egg, Tripe
(intestine) Ice-Cream, Locus
(stinking toe), Nasberry, Mango
and other fruit kind.
The weather was fair no rain
clouds could be seen in the
vicinity of the event. The boiling
sun got patrons scrambling for
shade, this was the kind of
weather the organizers wanted for
the event. On one side of the
field tents highlighted different
businesses, while on the other
hand booths displaying the various
types of curry meals.
Staging an event like this
requires a strong and reliable
security forces and the police
provided this service. Also in
attendance where the different
media houses providing excellent
live broadcast of the show. As the
evening gets cooler more people
started to come in. They couldn’t
wait to get their hands on the
various curry dishes.
As the day progresses the various
competitions started, first was
the ice-carving, followed by the
curry Ice-Cream making
competition; patrons could not
wait to see the end result for
them to sample or buy this ended
roughly about 8:30pm shortly
afterwards the concert started.
The Hertford dance group brings
back to memory Jamaican folk
dancing this caused the crowd to
go in frenzy. The concert was
hosted by Michael Hyper from Vybz
FM and Tammy B of Linkz fm.
Patrons were blessed with a gospel
segment by the angelic voice of
Chrissie D and company. Shortly
afterwards Westmoreland’s own Bomb
Blast graced the stage with an
energetic performance bringing
back the crowd on their feet.
Besides this act majority of the patrons came to see Digicel’s rising star
Christopher Martin. When it was
time for him to perform the crowd
went mad. He gave a splendid
performance he also had the ladies
eating from his hands
(metaphorically speaking) with
hits after hits. Shortly after his
departure from center stage the patrons could be
seen leaving the venue for their respective
places of abode.
