The Raynor King Memorial Stages Rally was run
in the humid cane fields of Frome, Georges
Plain, Westmoreland on Sunday, August 20, 2006,
and was a day full of thrilling and daring
displays of driving skill and excitement.
Total commitment was the name of the game from
the beginning, as the third rally in the five
event JMMC / Petcom /Digicel National Rally
Championship Series visited western Jamaica for
the second time, but unlike the season opening
Lloyd’s of Montego Bay/Mountain Dew Tarmac
Stages Rally held in March, this time the
eighteen (18) crews that turned up for the
start of the event were prepared to tackle not
the smooth tarmac stages like Daniel Town but
the equally fast marl roads of the Jamaica Sugar
Company, as the first dirt rally of the season
got underway.

Panton / Morin flying to victory lane.
Taking an early lead on Special Stage 2
(SS2) after the canceling of SS1 were defending
champions Douglas Gore and Mark Nelson in their
Motor Sales & Service Ltd/Slam Condoms/Value
Buys / Amsoil Walkerswood Caribbean Foods/Western
Wheel Alignment/Sherwin Williams Paints/Leroy's
Auto Glass / Rick's Cafe / Sandals Resorts / Boomerang Tyre Sales Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 8, but
the hard charging pair of Jeffrey Panton / Justin
Morin in the Air Jamaica Cargo / Dr.
Glass / Catherine's Peak / Mega Jamz / Bearings &
Seals Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 9 posted some
scorching times to head into lunch with the lead
of the event, with Gore/Nelson retiring with a
broken suspension at the midday halt. It was
then the turn of the son of the late Raynor
King, Rory, co driven by Winston Dawson in the
Slam Condoms/Sandals Resorts Lancer Evolution 6
1/2, to challenge for the lead, coming the
closest of the six JA8 cars to the leading pair.
They eventually finished second, a position that
they are only too familiar with, as the top spot
again eluded them. Leslie Madden and Robert
Dehaney were not about to let the Mitsubishis
take all of the stage wins, and ably supported
by Team RMS Racing stable mates Richard Rerrie
/Neil Baugh in the second Puma/Dunlop Tyres / Leroy’s
Auto Glass / KIG Subaru Impreza WRX they impressed
the fans with absolute commitment on the final
stages, making up some amount of time on the
leaders. The teammates eventually finished third
and fourth overall.

Ramchandani / Chambers.
Winning the JN8 class and finishing fifth
overall were Haresh Ramchandani and Colin
Chambers in the Team Mobay Racing Shopsmart / China
Motors Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 8, while hot
on their heels in sixth place was the brand new AMJ Racing Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 9 of Marc
Evans/Robert Thelwell as they debuted their ride
in front of the massive crowd of fans that
converged on the Frome stages.

Doin’ the Dew in Frome!
The highest placed 2WD car was that of Dean
Corrodus / Leroy Spence, who drove their Team Mobay Racing Mountain Dew Honda Civic Type R to
a convincing win in the JA3 class, outpacing
their closest 2WD rivals by over 2 minutes on
the day. That would be the team of Bobby
Marshal/Thomas Hall in the Singer/PPG Paints
Mitsubishi Mirage RS, who inherited the position
when Pernell Fitz-Coy and Marvin Porteous’ Team
Mobay Racing Anya’s maternity & Newborn Plus/Maran
Supplies/Chen’s Wheel Alignment/Mountain Dew
Toyota Starlet picked up a one-minute penalty
for breaking the timing beam too soon on SS4.
Michael Delfosse/Warren Lamey in the Mack
Attack/Goodyear Seat Ibiza were fourth in class
and eleventh overall.

Chan/Lee on a hard landing.
Richard Chan and Ivan Lee won the JA2 class in
“Crazy taxi” style, as they took their reliable
Team Mobay Racing Toyota Corolla GT sedan to
victory lane ahead of Michelle Delfosse and Xanu
Field in and Isuzu Gemini, the only all female
team in the event.
The final classified finishers were
the team of Junior Barnes/Sean Williams, as they
recovered from various mechanical maladies that
hindered their progress throughout the day in
the West Med Pharmaceuticals/Mekyah Spring Water
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 5. Joining Gore and
Nelson on the “did not finish” list were the
highly fancied 2WD teams of Rajendra Jadusingh/David
Anderson (steering component failure) and Tarik
Minott / Peter Clarke (electrical). The McDowell
brothers Gordon and Derrick’s Mazda 323 Gtr also
joined the list as it failed to restart after
the end of stage 4. The Suzuki Swift of Noel
Golding/Andre Gordon also did not finish, as the
car was seen stopped on the transit through the
cancelled first stage as a result of a failed
fuel pump.
The event was sponsored by KFC,
Petcom, Digicel, Mountain Dew, Sam Bull/Quic Aid
Wrecking Service, Carsmart Auto Traders, China
Motors, Knutsford Express, Lloyd's of Montego
Bay, Pharmaton & Ginsana Natural health
