Gustav Claims Several Lives

Gustav Flood RoadwaysThe Government estimates that as many as 11 persons may have died during the passage of Tropical storm Gustav. The police have confirmed seven deaths directly related to Tropical Storm Gustav.

But the authorities are yet to arrive at a final figure, and Prime Minister Golding fears it might rise to as many as 11.

Tropical Storm Gustav threatens Jamaica

Tropical Storm Gustav 2008
Based on the latest information from a Hurricane Hunter Aircraft early this morning, Gustav is beginning to strengthen as it nears Jamaica in the Caribbean. Maximum sustained winds are now 70 mph.

As of 8 a.m. EDT, the center of Gustav was located about 80 miles east Kingston, Jamaica, and was moving slowly southwest. Given a recent movement and redevelopment in a more southerly direction, it now appears the center of Gustav will past east, and perhaps south of Jamaica today, before turning back to the west.

Missing Women found dead

The two Hanover women who went missing last Sunday have been found dead.

The remains of Rashieka Clare, 17, also known as “Shalee” of Green Island and Stacy-Ann Kelly, 27, a shoe sales-woman of Orange Bay were found in a cave in the hills of Westmoreland Monday.

Meantime, the police have held a man who was wanted in connection with a missing businesswoman and teenaged girl.

Reno returns to Frome

FROME, Westmoreland

Three-time national champions Reno will return to their traditional home at the Frome Sports Club this season after playing most of the last two Premier League seasons in St Elizabeth.

Reno’s Technical Director Wendell Downswell told the Observer West yesterday that they hoped they would be able to play their first home game when the season opens at the newly refurbished Frome grounds.

Its the Yam

Usain BoltWith the entire Caribbean now celebrating the achievements of their athletes at the Olympics, Jamaica has firmly established itself as the sprint factory of the world. During Usain Bolt’s devastating run in the 100m finals, I sat watching the race in complete bewilderment, before I could shout the race was over. It was a race of the highest quality; without doubt the best ever run. The race was not even close, the gap of several feet between the lanky Bolt and the rest of the field was just unbelievable. To my amazement Bolt, who I expected to have been pushed all the way, started banging his chest from 70 yards out. For those who said he was boasting I say “Lef di youth alone.”

Jamaica rules in world record 4 x 100m Relay

Jamaica won 4 x 100m relay
(BEIJING, August 22) — Jamaica confirmed their new-found status as the greatest sprinting nation in the world, smashing the world record to win gold in the Men’s 4 x 100m Relay at the National Stadium on Friday, August 22.

Their victory was never in question, as anchor Asafa Powell crossed the finish line in 37.10 seconds, slicing three tenths of a second off the 15-year-old world record previously held by the United States.

Veronica Campbell-Brown takes gold
(BEIJING, August 21) — Athens 2004 Olympic Games gold medalist Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica successfully defended her Women’s 200m title, crossing the line for gold at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in a personal best of 21.74 seconds.

The 26-year-old was under extra pressure to retain her title after failing to qualify for the 100m at the Jamaican Olympic trials, but she was in control of the 200m race from the gun to the line.

Walker takes gold in the women’s 400m hurdles

Melanie Walker takes gold in 400m hurdles
(BEIJING, August 20) — Melanie Walker of Jamaica set an Olympic record to win the Women’s 400m Hurdles, emerging victorious over pre-race favorite and rival Sheena Tosta of the United States at the National Stadium on Wednesday, August 20.

Walker, in her Olympic debut, crossed the line in 52.64 seconds to prove that it is not only the Jamaican men who can set Athletics records.

Bolt breaks 200m world record – Photos

Usain Bolt the fastest man on earth
(BEIJING, August 20) — Jamaican Usain Bolt set a new world record of 19.30 seconds in the Men’s 200m final to take the gold medal in this event on August 20 at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Bolt became the first man to win the 100 and 200 in the same Olympics since Carl Lewis in 1984.

Churandy Martina of the Netherlands Antilles took silver with a nation’s best time of 19.82 seconds, holding off bronze medalist Shawn Crawford from the United States at 19.96 seconds.
