Frome defeats Green Island, Draws with Russeas

Frome Vs Green Island
Frome Technical continued their run toward reaching the inter-round stage of the daCosta Cup Football competition with a hard fought 4-1 victory over Green Island High on Monday. Led by a brace from Ricardo Monroe, Frome proved the better of the two though their opponent appeared to be better conditioned for the assignment, which – based on the underfoot condition at the Frome Sports Complex – was indeed the way to go.

On September 27th at another home ground match they end the match up between them and Russeas High at 1-1.

New exec for Westmoreland PDC

The Westmoreland Parish Development Committee (WPDC) has elected a new executive which has pledged, as a matter of priority, to lobby for a central sewage system for Savanna-la-Mar.

Noting that the outgoing administration had contacted all relevant agencies in respect of the sewage system, re-elected chairman Reverend Carlton Wilson advised that last year’s change in government meant the process had to be “done all over again”.

Approximately 70 members representing the five Develop-ment Areas in Westmoreland, namely Whitehouse, Darliston, Grange Hill, Savanna-la-Mar/Petersfield and Negril) met at the Anglican Church Hall in Savanna-la-Mar for the WPDC’s first Annual General Meeting in seven years.

Godfrey Stewart
Godfrey Stewart High vs. Petersfield High School DaCosta Cup match yesterday held at the Godfrey Stewart playfield on Lewis Street end on a draw.

Both team tussled throughout the match with Godfrey Stewart making numerous attempts to score while the Petersfield guys was doing more defending than attacking.

Both teams now have two points from two draw matches. Next match will be held at Manning’s High School on Saturday Sept, 27 – Manning’s vs. Godfrey Stewart

New machines to boost patient care at Savanna-la-Mar Hospital

News Equipments for the Savanna la mar Hospital
SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland

The Savanna-la-Mar hospital’s capacity to perform certain surgical procedures has doubled with the acquisition of two machines from the Scotia Jamaica Foundation (SJF).

The machines – a Vital Signs Monitor and a Laparoscopy (Tubal Ligation Single Puncture Diagnostic and Video System) – which were handed over last Friday by William ‘Bill’ Clarke, President and CEO of Scotia Bank Jamaica, are valued at J$4.5 million.

One gets bail in Hanover women murder case

Dermott Kerr, one of four men charged for the murder of 27-year-old Stacy-Ann Kelly and 17-year-old Rashieka Clare, has been granted bail pending October 14 when the case will next be mentioned in Savanna-la-Mar Resident’s Magistrate Court.

Kerr’s lawyer Dalton Reid secured his provisional release in the sum of $100,000 with one surety when the case was mentioned for the second time in the Savanna-la-Mar Resident’s Magistrate Court.
The other three accused, Roan Waite, represented by Savanna-la-Mar attorney Delford Morgan; Toneil Haughton and Jermaine Brown, both represented by attorney Morrell Beckford, were remanded.

JPS RESPONDS to billing controversy

Reeling from more than two weeks of controversy sparked by the unusually high light bills being issued to their customers, the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) has sought to explain what caused the billing errors.

In the last two weeks, customers of the light and power company, across the island have been complaining that they have been receiving usually high bills. The company has since explained that the errors were caused by the interruption with the company’s metre reading schedule.
According to the company’s external affairs manager for the JPS’ region west, Kathleen Cooke, the passages of Tropical Storms Fay and Gustav coupled with the Emancipation and Independence holidays prevented crews from doing metre readings.

Godfrey Stewart vs. Maud McLeod
Two DaCosta Cup matches took place in Westmoreland yesterday, Godfrey Stewart vs. Maud McLeod at the Godfrey Stewart home ground and Mannings High vs. Grange Hill High at the Grange Hill High home ground.

The Match between Godfrey Stewart and Maud McLeod did not commence till approximately 35 minutes pass the official match time due to inclement weather. The match went on for the full 90 minutes but after numerous attempts to score by both teams the match ended in a draw 0-0. Both teams will move on to their next match with 1 point gained from this match.

Save Our School, Grange Hill High

Morgan's River in Grange Hill, WestmorelandMorgan’s River may claim Grange Hill High

Not only are students from the Grange Hill High School longing for a good road surface on which to travel to school, they also have to worry on a daily basis about the destruction being caused by the Morgan’s River that seems to be eating away sections of the school compound.

So imminent is the danger that senior teachers and the school Principal have contacted the Parish Council and the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica (EFJ) in an effort to find solutions to the ever worsening problem that has beset the institution.

How come, JPS?

JPS! How Come?They chained the entrance to the doors to the Savanna-la-Mar branch office of the Jamaica Public Service and gathered in scores at the front of the building to protest the exorbitant light bills they have been receiving.

JPS Customers Islandwide have been issued with horrendously high electricity bills, with many staging protests at offices of the power company in several parishes over the matter. Savannah-la-Mar is obviously no different.

Where is my Child? .. 82-year-old woman makes last attempt at finding daughter

Iris Davis has not seen her daughter since 1978, and now, 30 years later, she is hoping that she can find her and rebuild their mother-daughter relationship.

Davis said she last saw her daughter, Louise Eulalee Downy, at a funeral. The funeral was for Downy’s father, Larkland Downy. Davis says she has no idea why her daughter has stopped communicating with her as they were quite close before the ceremony. “She always use to come see me before. I don’t know what happen,” she said.

The 82-year-old woman says the contact has gone so bad that she is not even sure if her daughter is still alive. “I want to find her long ago, but I always use to just ask around,” she said.
