Enfield Primary gets computers

Enfield, Westmoreland – Member of Parliament for Westmoreland Eastern, Luther Buchanan last week presented two computers to the Enfield Primary and Infant School in this rural parish, bringing the number of computers at the institution to seven.

“Recognising the importance of learning and the need to expose rural students to the outside world, I have made the computers available from my Education Fund,” said Buchanan, in making the presentation.

He was accompanied by Councillor Trevor Jamieson in whose division the school is located.

Buchanan argued that the initiative was timely as “with the move by Government to tax computers, it is important that schools have computers so as to expose them to those who are not able to afford their own.”

73 year-old murdered at home

Another senior citizen has been murdered by gunmen in Westmoreland. Dead is 73 year-old Hansel Jones of Farm Pen in the parish who was shot in the head at point blank range early Saturday morning by thieves who broke into his house.

“This is going to be so hard to accept and to understand; he was a great man who would gave his last and do without,” his son told the reporters.

Family members and residents were left stunned as news spread that the man they had all come to love and respect, had been killed. It is believed that Jones was at home alone with his wife when about 3 a.m., a sound was heard coming from one of the rooms. His wife allegedly got out of bed to investigate the sound while Jones attempted to see what was happening on the outside.

Robber Kills Man For $10,000

Two people were shot, one fatally on Thursday in Mango Hall district, Westmoreland police said, when a lone gunman kicked-in a door of a house belonging to 32 year-old Conroy Gray and his common-law wife and demanded money.

Police reports are that at about 2 a.m., Gray was at his home with his common-law wife when the door to his house was kicked-in and a man brandishing a gun demanded money. He was given $10,000 in cash but before leaving, he opened fire hitting both Gray and his companion.

The culprit, however, was injured when Gray managed to inflict a wound on him. Gray received multiple gunshot wounds all over his body while the common-law wife was shot in the foot. Narrow Escape!

Rohan SmithA man who on Monday abducted and attempted to rape a 17-year-old Mount Alvernia High School student is now behind bars, thanks to the quick thinking of Montego Bay’s Transport Authority.

The drama, which unfolded on Monday morning when the girl accepted a ride from the motorist in Sam Sharpe Square, saw a group of six inspectors in the Transport Authority’s Nissan Irvan motor van zipping through the communities of Rose Heights and Farm Heights in pusuit of the rapist whom they caught up with in front of the DeOkoro Magnate school for the gifted on Brandon Hill.

It was there, before the curious eyes of a bevy of spectators, that they collared the man with the help of two members of the Island’s Special Jamaica Constabulary Force.

“To see it was something else,” an eye-witness told the Observer West. It took all of them to overcome the big brute who was fighting back.”

Ralston Smith, the Transport Authority’s regional manager, told Observer West that his team had been combing the second city ‘for vehicles operating contrary to the terms and contract of their road licenses and unlicensed robots operating as public passenger vehicles.’

It was while monitoring the activities of a car which they suspected of operating illegally, that they happened upon the girl.

Veterans sparkle at Western Consciousness

Jah CureWhile it was Jah Cure that daybreak caught wreaking havoc, it was vintage music that ruled as Western Consciousness 21 unfolded on Saturday night before a small but appreciate gathering at the scenic Paradise Park near Savanna-la-mar, Westmoreland.

From the United Kingdom-based King Sounds, through to the likes of Admiral Tibet, the phenomenal Half Pint, a velvet-smooth Errol Dunkley, the potent Johnny Clarke and England-based Sista Musical aggregation, the story of Jamaica’s music was brilliantly told as each performer opened up their respective catalogues and generously offered musical gifts to the patrons.
When the Fireman Capleton closed the show at 6:30 a.m. with a well-received cameo, the satisfied fans did not even call for an encore and departed the venue, ignoring the fact that traditional crowd-pleasers Beenie Man, the Messenger Luciano and the living legend, Bunny Wailer, who were billed for the show, did not appear.
