Broughton, New Roads in Westmoreland Twenty20 final

Defending Champions Broughton and New Roads earned their place in the final of the Social Development Commission, Westmoreland Twenty20 Cricket Competition 2008, with contrasting semi-final wins on Sunday, October 26 at the Chantilly Playfield.

The first match was reduced to 10 overs aside because of a wet pitch saw Frome, who took first strike after losing the toss, eventually reaching 95 for four with J. Stennett hitting a robust 37 and R. Bacchas and O. Porteous 15 each.

However, with a small total posted it took the Defending Champions just 8.5 overs to race to victory at 96 for 2; Paul Palmer hitting an unbeaten 51 in the process.

In the second match of the afternoon, Elmore Gooden won the match for New Roads against Whitehouse when he was the only one to hit the stumps during the Bowl-off among the five bowlers per team that became necessary after the teams tied on run-rate.

Sent to bat in the contest that was shortened to 19 overs, Whitehouse lost their last wicket on the last ball of their innings of 121 against Damion Brown and Dwayne Robinson who took three and two wickets respectively.

Brown 18 and Barkley Daley 38 were the not-out batsmen when bad-light was called at the end of the 13th over with New Roads at 82 for 5 and both teams averaging 6.3 runs per over. Bowling first after losing the toss in the bowl-off, New Roads missed their first four attempts before Gooden struck and handed them victory to set up a mouth watering matchup against Broughton.

The final is set for Sunday, November 2 at a venue to be announced.
