Enfield, Westmoreland – Member of Parliament for Westmoreland Eastern, Luther Buchanan last week presented two computers to the Enfield Primary and Infant School in this rural parish, bringing the number of computers at the institution to seven.

“Recognising the importance of learning and the need to expose rural students to the outside world, I have made the computers available from my Education Fund,” said Buchanan, in making the presentation.

He was accompanied by Councillor Trevor Jamieson in whose division the school is located.

Buchanan argued that the initiative was timely as “with the move by Government to tax computers, it is important that schools have computers so as to expose them to those who are not able to afford their own.”

And in accepting the gift, Lorna Dunstan, the principal of the institution, thanked God and the MP for the donation.

“I must thank God and also Mr Buchanan for this valuable gift as it is of vital importance for students to utilise computers in this Global World,” she said.

Dunstan, who became head of the institution almost 10 years ago, added that the computers will greatly assist the 430 students and 15 teachers at the institution in developing their computer skills.

Meanwhile, Buchanan said he has already drafted a letter to an Internet provider in an effort to secure wireless access for the school. He also pledged to underwrite the cost of erecting grills on the door and windows of the computer laboratory, in an effort to make the facility more secure.

Enfield Primary and Infant is one of five primary schools in Buchanan’s constituency targeted to receive two computers each, while Maud McLeod High will get four.

St Leonard’s All Age and Darliston have already received theirs, while Petersville and Beaufort will get their allocation within another two weeks.
