Fire leaves nine homeless

It is said lightening never strikes twice in the same place but for 36 year-old Constance Barnaby, the saying is not for her as for the second time in three years her house has been destroyed by fire.

Ms. Barnaby, who lives in Grange Hill, Westmoreland, along with her children and others family members, watched in horror as fire from an unknowned origin devastated their five apartment house, leaving only ruin and smoldering debris in its wake. She said it all deja vu for her.

“I cannot explain it right now except that I have lived this all before. In 2006 my first house was burnt down and now this? It is hard to understand but God knows best,” She said while using a stick to dig through a section of the rubble of what was home sweet home, in search of the family cat that she said has gone missing since the incident.

She said her sister saw smoke coming from a section of the house at about 4:45 p.m. on Friday and placed a call to her while she was at a friend’s home in the community. She then immediately noticed black smoke rising from the distance. Moments later, an alarm was raised and they ran to the house only to find it being devoured by the flames.
