DARLISTON, Westmoreland
The homicide tally in this police division now stands at 44 since the start of this year-20 less than the comparative period last year- following the murder of 75-year-old businessman Alvin Cunningham.

Cunningham of Bottom Darliston died on his way to the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital Monday night after he was found at his businessplace with stab wounds.

The police theorise that Cunningham, who was found with his throat slashed and a stab wound to his abdomen, was robbed of an undisclosed sum by unknown assailants.

Reports are that about 10:30 pm Monday, a customer raised an alarm after discovering Cunningham lying in a pool of blood.

He was whisked away to hospital by residents, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

He just died just like that, somebody just come and stabbed him I don’t know what to say,” Melvin Cunningham, brother of the deceased.

“I can’t express it is too much a shocking death. I spoke with my brother on Sunday when I was coming from funeral. They slaughter my brother for what I don’t know. He did not trouble no one”, said his sister.

Cunningham’s murder comes sharply on the heels of that of another elderly businessman 68-year-old Stanley Davidson, who was shot and killed in the Little London community.
The police also theorised robbery as the motive for the killing of Davidson, who was also a builder.

The cops reported that Davidson was at his home with his family one evening last week when he was pounced upon by armed thugs after he opened his front door. The men demanded money, but after receiving $22,000 they demanded more.

However, Davidson was not allowed to satisfy their demand. The gunmen opened fire, hitting Davidson, killing him on the spot.

Davidson had been building and selling board houses for years, and also operated a radiator shop and haberdashery-businesses which employed scores of persons.

Some of his former employees who described him as a stalwart, were left distraught.

Alvin Cunningham was my uncle, my fathers brother. I am devastated to learn of the gruesome way in which he met his end. What in gods name goes through the mind of those who committed such an awful act to an innocent man – who served his community for so many years. I remember my uncle like it was yesterday – going abroad on farm work when he was a young man. He believed you get out of life what you put into it, its ironic his theory did not follow through for him.
Uncle Alvin lost his wife in 2007 to cancer and was just coming to terms with the loss when this has happened. I do believe the Jamaica government should seriously consider bringing back the death penalty – its the only deterrent that will lessen the senselessness of the murders happening in Jamaica. I was born in Jamaica and was hoping that one-day would return to my country – but doubt if I ever will; as with many other Jamaicans living abroad with whom shares the same view.
On another note, all these senseless killings does no good for the Tourist Industry – one of Jamaica biggest resource if from tourists visiting the country; tourists will rather choose other Island to visit that they feel safe in. Who can blame them (a holiday if for relaxing and unwinding) not watching your back to see who’s going to pounce on/or attack on you.

On a final note, I would like express my regrets to the Cunningham family; so sorry for your loss.
And a message to my beloved uncle; may the angels take you under their wings and guide you to a better place. You are always in our hearts and our thoughts.

    Loving neice of Alvin Cunningham
